Kenny Dope

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Kenny “DOPE” Gonzalez is one of the most prolific artists of the modern music age. The four time Grammy nominated musical genius has been entertaining and astounding the masses alike with his fusions of house, hip-hop, Latin, jazz, funk & soul, reggae, alternative pop and broken beats for 20 years. Known as a living encyclopedia of beats and tagged with the nickname “DEBO” by his closest friends, Kenny is a purveyor of sonic masterpieces.

In 1990, appropriately dubbed “MASTERS AT WORK”, Kenny “DOPE” Gonzalez and Little Louie Vega began a creative partnership. As the MAW sound became prominent and pervasive in the clubs, they became more sought after by artists and labels, eventually remixing artists such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Daft Punk, Barbara Tucker, India, Luther Vandross, BeBe Winans, George Benson, and Tito Puente. Others included Stephanie Mills, James Ingram, Eddie Palmaieri, Debbie Gibson, Bjork, Dee-Lite, Soul ll Soul, Donna Summers, Puppah Nas-T, and many-many more.

In this time frame, not only did Kenny collaborate with Louie on MAW projects. He was also solely producing and remixing tracks in the hip-hop and reggae scene. “Get Up” (Clap Your Hands), and “The Madd Racket” were huge club tracks and still are in the scene today. In the early 90’s Kenny produced the “Unreleased Project” featuring Shaggy on the “Gunshot” track. During this time Kenny also release tracks on Strictly Rhythm, Freeze, Nervous, Henry Street Records, and TNT under different aliases.

Kenny worked on collaborative work with Vega aside from work on his own solo endeavours. MAW’s Nuyorican Soul was born in 1993. Titled after their heritage (Puerto Rican), residence (New York City), and style of music (Soul). Nuyorican soul released its first single “The Nervous Track” on Nervous Records that year. “The Nervous Track” was the first broken beat record. This is where Kenny got to showcase the syncopated beat style he developed earlier. The second single “Mind Fluid“ was released in 1996 also on Nervous Records. The Nuyorican Soul album was completed and signed by music maestro Gilles Peterson. Every aspect of the albums creation had Kenny’s unerringly creative imprint written all over it. The album marked a particularly important moment, and the albums release in 1997 marked Kenny Dope’s transition into one of America’s most important contemporary producers.

Master at Work have been labelled “The most revolutionary house production team of the 90’s”, so imitated that their innovations are now cliché’s. Latin percussion, joyous vocals, and natural drumbeats are MAW trademarks levitating dance floors with the infectious feeling of ecstasy and energy. If ever there was massive dance floor filler, it was MAW’s 1997 record, “Nuyorican Soul”, and in 2002 the album, “Our Time is Coming”. with cameos by Patti Austin, James Ingram, and Stephanie Mills. It simply proves that MAW write and remix great songs that are organic and soulful. Highlights include the afrobeat-tinged MAW expensive “A Tribute to Fela”, Mills’s gospel fire on “Latin Lover,” and Roy Ayers’s glorious vibes solo on the title track.

Kenny Dopes break through as a solo artist came in 1995. One night disheartened by the music that was being released throughout the business, Kenny went home and pulled out a series of classic records. After 3 days Kenny had produced an entire album, “The Bucketheads” what he didn’t know was that this was going to be a huge turning point for him. With a plan to produce a record that was raw and fun, one track stood out, “THE BOMB (these sounds fall into my mind)”. With its driving drums, screeching sound effects and extended sample from Chicago’s “Street Player”, the song was an instant sensation. Gonzalez had gate crashed the European pop charts with his first major hit.

While production and touring accounted for most of his time, Kenny also founded Kay-Dee Records in 2003. The label came about when Scottish funk DJ legend Keb Darge came to Kenny with a challenge. After Keb heard MAW’s “The Nervous Track” he promised Kenny that he would come up with a funk version of the track. A short while later he came back to Kenny with “Nervous” by The New Mastersounds. Kay-Dee Record’s was born and the track became the first pressing on the label in 2003.

While production and touring account for most of his time, the last 2 decades Kenny Dope has had his hands full releasing literally thousands of tracks, remixing hundreds of singles, and globetrotting to DJ all over the world. Gonzalez continues to build his reputation …Whether its standing behind the control board playing to his followers, or searching for the next great re-release classic, the beat master will continue to shine as “THE” Master at Work.

Kele LeRoc

Friday, October 30th, 2009

She started singing when she was only three years old; her first huge underground hit was with Let Me Know which led her to sign to First Avenue Management. Her album Everybody’s Somebody was released in the UK in 1999, and she has worked with producers such as Rhett Lawrence (Mariah Carey, Monica, Eternal), Harvey Mason (Brandy and Chante Moore) and Vibetribe (DAS EFX and N’Dea Davenport).

Released when she was 21, Forest Gate-born Kele Le Roc’s debut album is a mature and stylistically varied release, with the first, extremely hummable, single Little Bit Of Lovin reaching straight the UK Top 10 and lingered in the charts for some time.

Although she’s London-based, the album was recorded in California with several high-profile producers including Rhett Lawrence and Harvey Mason, while Coolio crops up with a humorous intervention on the disco-tinged Just Think About You.

Although Everybody’s Somebody bears much of the polish of American R&B, there’s an excitement, energy and sassiness to it, coupled with a most confident vocal performance.

We’ve got fond memories of Kele Le Roc. We provided her with her first cover piece when we covered UK R&B for DJ in the summer of 1996. Then a 20 year old, she had been creating a buzz with her first single, the independently released, Best Kept Secret produced Let Me Know.

Kathy Brown

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Drawing inspiration from Patty La Belle, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Martha Wash, Kathy’s style has evolved through the years from soulful RnB to a more house flavoured tip and her work is often compared to that of Whitney and Aretha; always chic, always smooth, yet with an underlying hard edge. The New York-based songbird has enjoyed much success with releases on labels like Azuli, Easy Street, D:Vision and Defected, on which she appeared on J Magic’s Love Is Not A Game, Warren Clarke’s Over You and released her own Don’t Give Up. Her own Never Again was also released on Defected complete with remixes by Copyright.

Some of her best-known work includes the AM:PM-released Make Me Feel Like Singin, Happy People and Joy, which Kathy worked on with David Morales. The Cuttin Records-released I Appreciate and her work on Chanta Moore’s I’ll Never Find Another Love and Gloria Gaynor’s Got To Be Forever were also very well-received. She has worked with the cream of the house music crop including Masters At Work and Cevin Fisher and her beautiful voice is in-demand the world over.

Arguably her biggest hit in recent times was the international smash Strings Of Life (Stronger On My Own), produced by award-winning production duo Soul Central. A remake of the Derrick May original Strings Of Life (Stronger On My Own) premiered at the inaugural House Music Awards in 2004 and blew up around the world, becoming a WMC and Ibiza anthem and appearing on several mix compilations.

Most recently, Kathy has worked with the Major Boys on Voodoo Magic and Time And Time Again Part III. She also contributed an outstanding vocal performance on J Majik and Wickaman’s Now It’s Over, released on Infra Red. Her most recent release came in 2010 on our own MN2S label entitled Don’t Leave Me, showcasing remixed by Ron Carroll. 2012 will see her keep busy with a range of projects in the pipeline with some of the industry’s most celebrated artists. Kathy Brown is in the House!

Kat DeLuna

Friday, October 30th, 2009

And a fiery young newcomer named Kat DeLuna has served it. Whine Up featuring Elephant Man is not only a smash but a dance hit too, and it’s soon to be a global movement. Led by the 19-year-old star-on-the-rise, Kat’s debut album 9 Lives had chart-topping release in 2007.

To say Kat DeLuna is a crossover artist would be an understatement. DeLuna’s musical training is as unique as her sound, learning how to sing opera at a very early age. Her sound is a colorful canvas of strokes blending hip-hop, R&B, meringue, pop, Latin jazz, electronica and dance; the bilingual songstress does it all. At the young age of nineteen, Kat has some of music’s biggest names in entertainment singing her praise, with supporters ranging from R&B superstar R. Kelly, who has called her a “prodigy”, to the famous Salvadorian singer Alvaro Torres, referring to her as “the new Selena”. This quadruple threat artist not only has the complete package but also embodies the girl next-door attitude that helps her effortlessly connect with her audience.

Despite her success, things haven’t always come easy for the artist. Born in the Bronx, Kat was raised in the Dominican Republic, where by the age of four, friends and family had already recognised her talent. At age nine, shortly after she and her family relocated back to the states – this time to the coarse streets of Newark, New Jersey – she used her parents’ divorce as inspiration to pen her first song titled Estoy Triste (I Am Sad). “In the song, I’m telling my mum how I feel about the situation and I’m asking her not to cry for my daddy,” explains Kat.

Though Kat and her sisters found themselves forced to beg their neighbours for food after their father split, their financial situation prompted the level-headed pre-teen to stay in school and work harder to make it. She started to perform at local carnivals, sharing stages with such known Latino acts like Milly Quezada and Marc Anthony. In her free time, Kat studied Aretha Franklin and Billie Holiday records, which she imitated daily on her karaoke machine.

With that goal in mind, at age fourteen Kat was accepted to the New Jersey School of the Performing Arts, a specialized talent high school once attended by famed artists like Savion Glover, Whitney Houston and Tisha Campbell. As a freshman, she scoured the pages of The Village Voice for auditions, trying endlessly for a chance to showcase her undeniable talent. Finally one day she formed an all girl group named Coquette, a Latina, Hip Hop/R&B group.

While working with Coquette, Kat continued to search for opportunities to lead her towards her goal as a world-renowned performer. At age fifteen, Kat encountered her fate when she entered a karaoke competition where her version of the ornate classic I Will Always Love You seized first place. It was through this competition that she met legendary Cuban salsa singer Rey Ruiz. Ruiz gave Kat advice that she carries with her today, “He told me, nobody knows you better than you do, and no one can help you if you can’t help yourself,” says Kat. With this, Kat began aggressively writing her own music and has continued to do so since.

2010 brought on Kat’s second album titled Inside Out featuring tracks such as Push Push ft Akon, Party O’Clock, Be There and All In My Head. On top of that she released the 2011 smash hit I’m Alright in collaboration with Jean-Roch and Flo Rida, proving to the industry she’s got what it takes.

Joe T. Vannelli

His gigs have been unforgettable for the likes of Ministry of Sound, Soap, Renaissance, Cream and many others, while his last tour in Australia was a huge success.

Meanwhile 2010 saw the raving remix Get Involved by Ginuwife ft. Timbaland & Miss Elliot that took the global venues by storm.

On top of his debut label JT Company, JTV has also created several more among them Dream Beat, DBX Records, Muzic Without Control Records, Clubbin’ Records and 909 Records.

Be sure to follow him during his radio show and definitely visit his Supalova night as you won’t be disappointed. If ever in doubt, just repeat his favourite slogan “House Forever”.

JD Davis

Friday, October 30th, 2009

JD Davis has known success throughout his career, lending his voice and song-writing abilities to titles such as Dave Davis’ Transfiguration (1996), Sinema’s In my eyes (2002), Chab’s Closer To Me (2005) and David Guetta’s The World Is Mine (2004) and In Love With Myself (2005). He was notably elected as the Best International Artist at the Dance Music Awards 2006 in Ukraine.

Known for both his qualities as a DJ (most remarkably for his technical abilities) and for his vocal signature, Davis is in constant activity. Musically he shares his time between his two passions: studio collaborations with artists such as Chab, Antoine Clamaran, Joachim Garraud, David Guetta, Kiko, Sinema, Playgroup (Trevor Jackson) and Marc Romboy, and his live performances. Great crowds gather for his electro-groovy-house sets, where the music and sounds are ceaselessly renewed and during which he sings – interpreting live his own hits! JD Davis is unique in this as he opens the crowds during his live performances to new horizons — slowly giving birth to the concept of a DJ-vocalist!

Davis has released many singles such as Bocca (2006), Losing Track Of Time feat. Yves Larock (2006), Girlz featuring Chab (2007) and Goodthing (2007). In 2006 Davis launched his own label MConvene Records inaugurating it with the above-mentioned single Losing Track Of Time. Tracks such as Get High and Lonely both collaborated with Chab are worth a listen as they convey the best of Davis.

JD Davis is a desired DJ being asked to perform at world venues in places such as Ibiza, Tokyo, Montreal, Moscow, Miami, Chicago, Latin America and many more. Wherever he chooses to go, be sure to follow and expect funky vibes and a passionate atmosphere.

DJ Jazzy Jeff

Friday, October 30th, 2009

In 1985 Jeffrey Allen Townes exploded onto the music scene as half of the superstar duo known as DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince (long-time partner/performer/actor Will Smith). Since then they have gone on to sell over ten million records worldwide. The infamous pop-rap pair has also won three Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, two NAACP Awards, two Soul Train Music Awards and an MTV Music Award.

In 1990 Jeff fulfilled his long-time dream and started A Touch of Jazz Inc. in his hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. ATOJ is a full-scale, musical production facility. Housing four complete digital and analog rooms, A Touch of Jazz Studios also has a variety of vintage microphones, keyboards and gear. Pre-production, recording, and mixing are performed magically and almost effortlessly by a team of talented young producers. Jazzy Jeff prides himself on the laid-back atmosphere that allows all those who enter to feel unity and inspiration. The result of this relaxed attitude is what has made ATOJ renowned and revered as THE place to create music.

A Touch of Jazz Inc. has various musical credits to its name including the theme to The Fresh Prince of Bel Air television show, a song on The Simpsons compilation album and the theme to the UPN Network’s Between Brothers. ATOJ produced songs on the Wild Wild West, Love Jones, The Wood, and In Too Deep movie soundtracks. A Touch of Jazz has also worked with Kenny Lattimore, Tatyana Ali, MC Lyte, Darius Rucker (front man for Hootie and the Blowfish), and pop star Jewel, who has ATOJ releases on both her latest release 0304, and an upcoming album by hip-hop violinist Miri Ben Ari. Jeff produced three songs on Will Smith’s first solo album and served as executive producer on Will’s second solo project, aptly titled Willenium, which is now multi-platinum.

While creating material for outside artists, A Touch of Jazz is now developing its own roster of talent to present to the world. In summer 2000, A Touch of Jazz produced Jill Scott’s debut album Who is Jill Scott? Words and Sound Vol. 1. Jeff executive produced Jill’s now multi-platinum album and serves as executive producer again on her highly anticipated sophomore effort, Beautifully Human: Words & Sounds vol. 2. As well as being the signature for Philly sound and flavour, Jill Scott has won accolades worldwide and several Grammy nominations. Musiq Soulchild’s debut album Aijuswanaseing, also produced by ATOJ, is complimentary to the studio’s millennium climax of performers, along with Floetry, whose DreamWorks debut has earned them both BET Award and Grammy Award nominations.

Jeff’s success as a producer pre-empted his brilliant insight as founder and CEO of A Touch of Jazz Inc. and now his instincts are leading him to sculpt, perfect and project his already definitive music into the future. Jazzy Jeff and his producers’ A Touch Of Jazz style have succeeded in providing acts with substance and stability. 2012 holds only hope and anticipation for the growth enterprise A Touch of Jazz has already become, built by the man that has already been.

Jamie Lewis

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Jamie Lewis began his career in the mid 80s when he first appeared around Swiss venues playing classic disco and funk until the late 80s when he was introduced to house, and soon enough established himself as one of Europe’s greatest house producers. In 1987 he opened up his own record shop called Dee Jay Service that ultimately became the foundation of the Swiss and International DJ scene and ran for almost two decades.

By the early 90s he had already made a name for himself in the club scene, but decided to take it to the next level and in 1992 he released his debut Anixus EP with the Italian label UMM. He followed it up with the release of Anixus EP 2 in 1994 on the same label, blasting himself onto the worldwide scene.

During the 90s he produced many well-established and popular singles such as The Poem, Can’t Live Without You, Back To Roots, Eau De Chante and Paradise, most of them released on UMM. In 1997 he launched his own label Purple Music establishing it with Sabrynaah Pope’s single Shelter (and adding his own remix), and eventually his own single For You featuring Michael Watford. In the same year Lewis began a residency called Purple Music Nights at the venue Kaufleuten in Zurich eventually spreading it to the club Atlantis in Basel in 2000.

Since then Jamie has showcased his talents in some of the world’s most vibrating venues such as Pacha (Ibiza), El Divino (Ibiza), Cielo (New York) and Ministry of Sound (London) among others. 2001 saw the release of the single Streetlife but this time on the praised Purple Music imprint. In the following few years Lewis released several distinguished singles such as Independent Moods feat. Louis Benedetti (2002), It’s Allright feat. Lisa Millett (2004) and It’s Over feat. Michael Watford (2006).

His most successful productions so far have been the acclaimed singles The Light (2002) and Be Thankful (2005) that he collaborated with the wonderful Michelle Weeks, and brought him nominations at the UK House Music Awards. Purple Music went on to release more of his productions such as Unity (2007), the follow-up It’s Not Over (Baby Please) (2008) featuring Michael Watford, Body Music feat. Keith Thompson (2008), It’s On Your Face and Michael’s Prayer (2009) both featuring Michael Watford.

Jamie Lewis has been nominated for and won several prestigious awards; he was nominated for the UK House Music Awards in 2004 and 2005 for his label Purple Music and as a producer, in the categories “best producer”, “best WMC Miami’s 2004 and 2005 song” and “breakthrough best European label”. He also won the 2006 Ibiza DJ Awards of the 9th Edition in the category “breakthrough best DJ of the year”.

He has created many club anthems that have conquered the world including Hooked On You (2004), You Are The One (2005), Not Too Shabby (2006) and Tattoo Woman (2009), all remixes of the disco legend Cerrone and proving he has exceptional, roof-raising remix skills. Despite his activeness in production and DJ-ing, Jamie Lewis finds the time to collaborate with over 75 different radio stations worldwide including a weekly radio show at Radio FG, 105 Switzerland & Italy and a monthly partnership with Maxima & Loca FM.

This year in July Jamie released his highly anticipated single Sunshine Hotel in collaboration with Cynthia Manley and Deep Solution’s track Calypso Woman (feat. Roland Clark) where Jamie participated as a co-producer. He also released the compilation My Girlfriend Is Out Of Town Vol. 5 now in October.

With so much going on, and with so much experience and talent behind him, the man who helped shape house music is still spinning the records and twisting the sounds. With several singles forthcoming, we can only sit back and admire.

Jamelia

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Jamelia is one of Britain’s most successful black female entertainers. Her career has spanned over ten years after being signed straight out of school at the age of fifteen to one of the biggest record companies in the world.

In 2004 she had three Top 5 hits from her last album Thank You – the seminal Superstar (reached #3), Thank You (#2) and her co-written single with Chris Martin See It In A Boy’s Eyes, which reached #5. Incredibly, Jamelia then stormed the Top 10 again with Stop, her theme tune for the second Bridget Jones film.

At this point she was unstoppable and one of the most successful solo artists in the country. Her UK success was emulated in Europe where she was a continual serious chart presence, and in Australia and New Zealand where she reached #1.

This triumphant period in Jamelia’s career also saw her sweep the board at the Mobo Awards, where she won all of her three nominated awards including Best UK Act. A week later no less a figure than Bono was genuflecting to her at the Q Awards, where she won Best Single for See It In A Boy’s Eyes. Coupled with words of high praise at the same event from Elton John, you could have been forgiven for thinking things couldn’t get much better. But a week later Jamelia was signed by the prestigious modelling agency ICM and swiftly got her first contract as the face/legs of Pretty Polly and also a high profile contract with Reebok.

More recently Jamelia has earned the coveted role of appearing alongside two of the world biggest supermodels fronting her own ethnic hair care range Model Me, stocked nationwide in Boots stores – and will this year be launching her autobiography following her turbulent childhood, abuse relationships and family controversy.

Creatively Jamelia has been focusing on developing her acting skills and is choosing her next role carefully in advance of her debut performance. She is also currently in the studio, this time developing her writing and production skills in the hope to give unknown artists the benefit of her experience.
