Denise Johns

Despite being born in Luxembourg and growing up in the United States, Denise Johns competes for Great Britain at beach volleyball and is available to talk about her sport at your after dinner event, TV programme or much more. Having started to play volleyball at the age of ten, Denise also showed great promise from a young age in swimming and track events.

It was at university in Cincinnati where Denise obtained a bachelor degree in architecture that Denise decided to concentrate on rowing rather than volleyball. Moving to Atlanta in 2002, though, brought about another change in direction and saw Denise focus on beach volleyball once again, playing on the United States East coast. Following plenty of success in said tournaments, Denise moved to California and played on the AVP Tour for four years from 2003 onwards. The same year she won the AVP Next National Championships and has since competed in a total of 42 AVP tournaments, 6 FIVB tournaments and 22 other events around the world. In 2006 she was ranked 12th in the world and won first place in the Weymouth Classic, also in 2006.

Denise currently plays with fellow British star Lucy Boulton and trains at the University of Bath, and is married to Jody Gooding, also a Team GB member. Outside of the sport Denise Johns still does some work as an architect and is a hopeful for the 2012 summer Olympics.
