Lizzie Armitstead has made history by winning Britain’s first medal for the 2012 Olympics. The 23-year-old finished the final sprint in the pouring rain and was only just beaten by Netherlands’ Marianne Vos. Russian Olga Zabelinskaya finished with bronze in an exciting rain-soaked race that finished on The Mall, Buckingham Palace.
Born in Otley in 1988, Lizzie races on both track and road and has represented Great Britain internationally since picking up the sport in 2004 after the British Cycling’s Olympic Talent Team visited her school. Before long Lizzie had become Under 23 European Champion in 2008 and 2008 and was also a member of the winning team pursuit squad at the Track World Championships in 2009. Lizzie has even managed to pick up medals after jumping back on the bike following a fall, and with strapped and numb fingers and thumb!
