Steve ‘Smooth’ Sutherland is one of the most respected and talented DJs on the scene.
Widely recognised as a key ambassador of urban music, Steve’s long-standing association with Twice As Nice and Galaxy Radio have allowed him to showcase his talents to a wide audience and heavily contribute to the urban music scene.
As a DJ, Steve’s talent is recognised by both the music industry and his worldwide fan base. Throughout the past six years he has received the Best Club and Radio DJ Mobo award on four occasions – an unprecedented achievement. As well as being the most successful DJ in the history of the Mobos, Steve has also won a host of other awards and nominations such as Best Urban DJ at the 2005 Pacha DJ Awards.
Steve first became recognised on the urban club scene for his DJ residencies at Twice As Nice and Smoove. Twice As Nice is one of the UK’s most influential tour brands and through this connection Steve has toured extensively as a DJ. He has also been heavily involved with the Twice As Nice CD compilation series. Released through Universal Music, these series achieved significant commercial success – including three Gold discs and one Platinum. Steve has also held an acclaimed residency for Smoove at Ministry Of Sound.
From these high profile residencies, Steve has moved onto become a premier urban DJ on a global scale. Consistently in high demand, his versatility and talent has taken him around the world performing shows for the likes of MTV, Nokia and UMF. Since 2005, Steve has joined Roger Sanchez as a fortnightly guest at Pacha (Ibiza) throughout the summer and has performed high profile shows at events such as the Cannes Film Festival. Steve also regularly performs across Europe on the Twice As Nice Summer Tour and tours his unique urban sound to destinations such as Africa, Dubai, the Far East and Scandinavia, as well as extensively throughout Europe (Athens, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Germany and Switzerland).
In addition to his club work, Steve is also an award winning radio DJ. Initially working with the BBC and subsequently Choice FM, Steve now presents two weekly shows that form the backbone of Galaxy FM’s weekend schedule. On Saturday nights, he presents The Official Jump Off from 9pm -11pm and then returns on Sunday with Galaxy presents…Steve Sutherland – a four hour marathon show from 9pm – 1am. Featuring upfront tracks and heavy urban beats, combined with a stellar cast of superstar guests, Steve’s shows on Galaxy are some of the most popular broadcasts on the UK’s most popular commercial radio station. In fact, Steve has the largest audience share for an urban music show in the UK and guests that have featured on the show include Kanye West, Beyonce, Usher, LL Cool J, Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent, Alicia Keys, Busta Rhymes, Sean Paul, Pharrel Williams, Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson.
With his contributions to Galaxy and his DJ-ing commitments set to continue, Steve is also currently extending his media commitments. He has recently featured as a judge on the C4 show Chancers and is a regular on MTV’s Hugo Urban Rules – two TV programmes that are dedicated to exposing the best up-and-coming urban talent. As you can see, Steve is keeping up the pressure and doing what he does best; rocking clubs and airwaves and heavily contributing to the urban scene.
