New signing: Jazzie B (DJ sets) | Features | MN2S

After recently welcoming Soul II Soul to the live roster, MN2S is now also taking DJ bookings for the group’s figurehead, Jazzie B.

DJing since the late ‘70s after several of his siblings had been running sound systems since the ‘60s, he started building his own sound system at the age of 13 and playing local parties. “We’re from the days when a number 14 bus and a supermarket trolley got us around” he once said of that era. His first sound system, Jah Rico, played reggae around North London, before he started the Soul II Soul Sound System with a wider musical remit – which lead on to the band.

Cutting his teeth on the warehouse scene in the ‘80s, it was his Sunday night residency at Covent Garden’s Africa Centre that really launched him as a DJ. In 1988, Virgin Records signed Jazzie and Soul II Soul up to begin their illustrious recording career. Jazzie also held down a show on Kiss FM, and in recent times had a weekly show on BBC London.

Over the years, he has remixed the likes of Isaac Hayes, Public Enemy, Destiny’s Child, Nas and Ziggy Marley, and mixed compilations including Ministry of Sound’s ‘Masterpiece’ series. He received an OBE from the Queen in the 2008 New Year Honours, and the Inspiration Award at the 2008 Ivor Novello Awards.

He continues to spread the Soul II Soul ethos in his DJ sets at clubs and festivals across the world.
