Lucky Seven: The Golden Boy | Features | MN2S

Birmingham house sensation The Golden Boy has been ripping up the scene over the last couple of years, bringing his peak-time, anthemic house sound to some of the biggest labels in the game, including Toolroom Records, Defected, MadTech, Eton Messy Records and Cr2 Trax. With support from everyone from Pete Tong to Oliver Heldens, he has been winning fans far and wide, and his Lauryn Hill bootleg has amassed over 2 million plays to date.

His DJ career continues to blossom, and he’s shared stages and booths with the likes of Paul Woolford, MK and Citizenn. We asked him to share the seven tracks that have proved failsafes for him in his sets over the years.

Junior Jack – Thrill Me [PIAS]

A big classic that I love to drop at peak times during my sets. I played this last NYE at Rock City Nottingham whilst warming up for MK. The gig itself is one I’ll never forget. This was one of the standout tracks for me.

Josh Wink – Higher State Of Consciousness (Dex & Jonesy’s Higher State Remix) [Manifesto]

A strange one as it’s so fast – however, slowed down it fits perfectly into a house set. I first came across it via Eats Everything at Hideout. I got my hands on it and never stopped playing it. A great track to play towards the end of a set to finish on a high! My favourite memory of playing this was early this year at XOYO for an Eton Messy Presents night. The second drop was incredible; people lost their minds!

Andhim – Boy Boy Boy [Black Butter Records]

More of a recent track rather than a classic. It got a re-release on Black Butter recently this year which inspired me to start playing it again. A great, fun summer track. I remember this going down really well at Culture Club in Ghent, Belgium. The resident DJ and the owner liked it that much they invited me over again!

Route 94 – Misunderstood [Leftroom]

A really well-produced dance floor groover. Again, this was the staple of my sets throughout 2014. I mix the Daft Punk ‘Technologic’ vocal over it and used to go down really well with the familiar vocal. The best reaction I had to this was at the Button Factory in Dublin. The Irish love a good rave!

Cristoph – Do To Me [DFTD]

Another big house track on DFTD which used to go off in my sets. My fondest memory of playing this was at The Nest in London. It’s a really low ceilinged basement and in the second drop I remember them banging the ceiling waiting for the drop. Once it finally dropped it was madness!

MK – Always (The Golden Boy Remix) [Defected]

My first ‘big’ official remix and what a way to start! I remember playing this for the first time at a dingy basement in Dublin well before it was accepted as an official release. The crowd response was nothing like I’d ever got before to one of my own tracks, so I had a feeling it would do well. I also got my first Pete Tong play with it as well.

The Golden Boy – All The Way

It might be a bit self-indulgent putting in two of my own tracks but this one always gets an incredible response! It’s not out yet, and the way the crowds have been reacting I have been blown away. Again NYE was a fond memory, however I played it at Digital Newcastle late last year and the place erupted. I’ve never seen a crowd go so wild! I had tweets and messages the next day asking when it was out and if they could listen to it. I hope I haven’t made them wait too long!
