Voice of house music Robert Owens sat down with MN2S for a chat about clubs, performing, and BBC Radio 1′s Mosca.
You’ve pretty much been there since the beginning of house music and are still one of the scene’s most relevant artists, how hard is it to stay current in a genre that always looks to the new?
I’ve always given only myself to this music scene, I have never followed a fad in fashion. People have often told me they appreciate me standing unique outside what’s considered normal at any given time. I have always felt you can only give yourself and you should learn to be happy with that. I’m lucky and grateful the new generation often looks at my thoughts and viewpoints for directions.
You’re based in the UK now? What made you decided to re-locate to Europe?
From the first time I came to this country, there was an instant love for the beauty I found in the English people, they embraced me and took me in as if I were a member of their family.
You’ve worked with some great producers over your career, if you had to pick one, what would be your favourite collaboration?
Every individual I’ve worked with is unique, special, and number one in their own right. Nothing and no one is better than the other in my life.
In previous interviews you’ve talked about the special vibe and feeling of clubs like the Music Box and Paradise Garage, are there any clubs in the world today that give you same kind of feelings?
Every time I perform I live those moments, I feel the spirit of those clubs radiate through each performance I give present day.
The message your music carries is always quite real and positive. Do you feel house music in 2012 promotes a real, positive message?
Yes if you search there are many beautiful tracks that convey the messages of hope, faith, love and happiness, and I try to cover these thoughts when I perform and DJ. It’s wonderful when you reach out to people from an organic grounded level of thinking. I live what I give, I hope and have been told people feel that. I’ve often told many people you are my lifeline and I’m willing to go through anything to reach your love.
Having performed, partied and experienced some of the world’s most legendary parties and clubs do you still get excited to perform and party yourself?
Yes I still enjoy every moment as if it was my last. Tomorrow is not promised to me but I have right now and fingers crossed the next moment, the next day, and the next party to be happy as I was then, happy as I am now, happy as I hope to be each and every day to come.
You’ve recently collaborated with Mosca on his new EP for Hypercolour, how did the hook up come about? What are your thoughts on the current UK ‘Bass’ sound that artist like Mosca are being associated with?
He told my booking agents MN2S he wanted me to sing on one of his tracks, they asked me to come into the studio to meet him and we connected in that first meeting. I think he is an amazing artist as well as many of the other new artists I continue to meet.
Having accomplished so much in your career, what’s next for you?
A DJ cook off – if you just smiled that’s the best next thing I can do!
