With well over 100 million YouTube views to his name, Gyptian is one of the biggest reggae stars of the last decade. His named stemmed from his habit of wearing a shirt around his head when he performed and twisting his beard into the style of an Egyptian pharaoh during his early days taking part in various talent contests in his home country.
He released his debut album back in 2004 and soon set about conquering the Jamaican chart, but it was 2010 single ‘Hold Yuh’ that broke him internationally. The anthem broke into the UK Top 20 after Ministry of Sound signed it, and it found further life in a remix version featuring Nicki Minaj and other reworkings from Shy FX, Major Lazer and Toddla T. The track also won him 2010 MOBO and Soul Train awards for Best Reggae Artist.
He has collaborated with the likes of Mary J. Blige, Busta Rhymes and Mr. Vegas, and his last album ‘Sex, Love and Reggae’ topped the Billboard Reggae Album Chart in 2013 after his previous two efforts hit No. 2 and No. 4.
New album ‘Nothing To Lose’ is due for release soon, and latest single ‘All On Me’ has had over 1.3m views and support from BBC 1Xtra, Kiss and Capital XTRA after receiving heavy dancehall club and radio rotation across Jamaica and the US.
