Chinese Football

Chinese Football is a prominent indie rock and math rock band founded in 2011 in Wuhan, China, by Xu Bo and Wang Bo. The duo connected through an online bulletin board system, both having recently departed from other musical projects. They named their band after the American emo-math rock group American Football, establishing a unique identity that blends pop punk and math rock influences. Their self-titled debut album, released in 2015, marked the beginning of their journey, showcasing their distinctive sound and earning them a dedicated following.

The band’s musical style is characterized by intricate melodies and electronic elements, drawing inspiration from genres such as j-pop and midwest emo. Xu Bo, the lead guitarist, cites influential bands like Envy and Jimmy Eat World, which have shaped their sound. Their lyrical themes often reflect personal experiences, resonating with listeners through relatable emotions of confusion and frustration. This authenticity has helped them carve a niche in the indie music scene, gaining international recognition.

In addition to their debut album, Chinese Football created a trilogy of EPs themed around video games, further demonstrating their creativity and commitment to storytelling through music.
