Acid jazz pioneers Night Trains are responsible for some of the genre’s finest recordings, having spent decades signed to the influential Acid Jazz Records. In 2017 they returned to the international live scene after a 15-year hiatus to celebrate the release of their era-defining compilation album ‘Night Trains Lovesick 1987-2017’.
Formed in 1987 by bassist, producer and DJ Hugh Brooker, they became part of the first wave of acts signed to the legendary Acid Jazz Records. Their first release was the underground club hit ‘Open Channel D’, followed swiftly by the critically acclaimed 1990 debut album ‘Checkmate’ on Gilles Peterson’s Beat Goes Public. Returning to Acid Jazz Records in the early 90’s, the band released the two timeless albums ‘Loaded’ and ‘Sleazeball’ along with several singles that cemented their position as forward-thinking artists of the highest calibre. ‘Sleazeball’ featured the international club hit ‘Lovesick’, a track for which the band are still most recognised. Following this success, the band signed a deal with Instinct Records in New York, playing live across Europe and Japan and supporting and touring with artists as diverse as Fatboy Slim, Jamiroquai, Gil Scott Heron and Afrika Bambaataa.
In 2017 Night Trains reunited, pairing with sublime vocalist Jennie Bellestar Matthias on the up-tempo, horn driven, ‘Do Anything You Wanna Do’, receiving radio support from Robert Elms and Craig Charles on his influential BBC 6 Music Soul and Funk show. Now a seven-piece vocal, horn and percussion-led line up, the band continue to tour extensively across the globe.
