Chart-topper, UNICEF ambassador and voice actor Toya Delazy is a musician from Durban, South Africa, blending jazz, electro and hip-hop to create a synthesis of styles that transcends borders. Now based in London, producer, rapper and singer-songwriter Latoya Buthelezi has made her mark as one of the finest performers to break new ground in South Africa’s music industry. At age 9 she began her training in classical piano, attending Howard College’s prestigious Jazz Program in Durban in 2009.
After earning her stripes performing around Durban’s pubs with her keyboard and a beatboxer, Delazy found her first big break after being scouted to play Africa Day in 2011. Toya subsequently signed to Sony Music Africa, releasing her debut album ‘Due Drop’ in April 2012. With more than 1600 radio plays and 400 000 YouTube views, her iconic first single ‘Pump It On’ dominated South Africa’s Top 40 for 16 weeks and beyond, prompting Reebok to recruit her as a brand ambassador in 2012. With following singles ‘Heart,’ ‘Love Is In The Air’ and ‘Are You Gonna Stay’, ‘Due Drop’, she soon reached Gold status and was Newcomer of The Year, Best Pop Album and Best Produced at the 2013 South African Music Awards in addition to a BET Award Nomination for Best International Act. After a 120-date tour across Southern Africa, Toya was invited to open for Paolo Nutini and Ne-Yo during their tour of the African continent.
In 2014 Delazy finished her 2nd album, releasing hit singles ‘Forbidden Fruit’ and ‘My City’ to broad acclaim. ‘Ascension’ propelled Toya to international stardom, booking a headline slot at the Apollo Theatre NYC and scoring Best International Song Award at the 2016 Out Music Awards. The following year Delazy parted ways with Sony and branched out on her own, starting her own record label Delazy Entertainment. Since then, the talented musician has gone from strength to strength, releasing her third album ‘Uncommodified’ in late 2017 and earning a nomination for the 2018 Alternative 100 Music Power List. Singles from the record were added to influential playlists by both Spotify and Apple Music, who described the album a “spectacular multidisciplinary musical artwork”.
With a sound that perpetually evolves, infusing the soulful music of South Africa with hip-hop, bass and grime, Toya Delazy continues to excite listeners and energise audiences across the globe.
