Andrew Davis

Sir Andrew Frank Davis CBE, born on February 2, 1944, stands as a distinguished English conductor with a remarkable career spanning across the globe. Currently holding the esteemed position of conductor laureate for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Davis has left an indelible mark on the world of classical music.

Davis embarked on his conducting journey as the associate conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in 1970, marking the beginning of a series of significant roles. In 1975, he assumed the role of music director for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until 1988. Even after stepping down, Davis retained his connection with the TSO by taking on the title of Conductor Laureate.

In 2000, Davis took the helm as the music director and principal conductor of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, showcasing his exceptional talents. Notably, his work in Chicago included the groundbreaking conducting of Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen cycle in 2005.

Davis’s international influence extended to his role as the chief conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, a position he assumed in January 2013. His exceptional leadership earned him a contract extension through 2019, culminating in his successful tenure concluding in December 2019.
