Retired English footballer Gordon Banks is one of the most celebrated of the modern era and is now a popular guest speaker and inspirational host who lights up any event he attends. Gordon was the goalkeeper who played in the 1966 World Cup wining England side that defeated West Germany and so is only one of very few Englishmen to hold that honour. During his domestic career he played 628 games over 15 years, turning out for team such a Chesterfield, Leicester, Stoke City and St Patrick’s Athletic. He was Stoke’s goalkeeper in the 1972 League Cup win, which was the club’s only major honour, and was still at Stoke and was England’s number one when a car crash in October 1972 cost him both the sight in one eye and his professional career.
Gordon won an impressive 73 caps for his country and the IFFHS named Banks the second best goalkeeper of the 20th century 56after Lev Yashin and ahead of Dino Zoff. He was named FWA Footballer of the Year in 1972, and was named FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year on six occasions, so few really come close to his ability between the sticks. Gordon Banks has a rare insight in that he has won the football World Cup with England. As such his stories and memories make for magical listening at any award or events ceremony. He delivers them with pride and passion and visible inspires audiences wherever he appears.
