Australian politician and former major general Jim Molan served as the Senator for New South Wales, and has 40 years of military experience behind him.
Molan joined the army immediately after finishing high school, and attended the Royal Military College before being assigned to the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He then worked his way up through the ranks of the army, holding positions such as Commander of the Australian Defence College and the Chief of Operations in Iraq. This role involved him overseeing numerous operations within Iraq, as part of the senior management team of the Headquarters Multinational Force in Iraq. His selfless and strategic service saw him awarded the Distinguished Service Cross as well as the Legion of Merit from the US Government. His role in Iraq was also the subject of his popular 2008 book, Running the War in Iraq.
After retiring from the Australian armed forces, Molan landed a role as special envoy for Operation Sovereign Borders, serving the Abbott Government. He spent a few years working on the coalition’s border and immigration policies, before running as a candidate in the 2016 federal election as a Liberal Party senator. He served as Senator for New South Wales for 2 years. Molan has appeared on television, speaking both about his time in the military and his role in politics, as well as having published numerous articles and opinion pieces in national publications. He regularly gives speeches and participates in debates, and has become known for his expert knowledge and skilful storytelling.
