Retired English boxer Michael Watson was arguably the greatest English boxer to never become world champion. Nowadays Michael is a fine and in demand guest speaker who is a charming personality and has overcome much adversity to even be alive. Watson was born in London and in all he had 30 professional fights, winning 25 in all, 21 by knockout and losing just four, His career was cut tragically short ahead of time after an ill-fated re-match with Chris Eubank in 1991.
Before that, Michael shot up through the English, Commonwealth and world rankings having started to box aged just 14. A quick leaner, he was a great hope for the Olympic team in 1984 but sadly never got selected. Instead he turned pro in 1984 and fought in big fights with Nigel Benn for the British Commonwealth middleweight title. Soon after he lost in a world title fight to Jamaican Mike McCallum but then fought a hard fight against Chris Eubank in another title shot. A rematch was ordered it was in this fight Michael received a knockout upper cut that left him unconscious. He spent 40 days in a coma and had six brain operations to remove a blood clot and spent over a year in intensive care and rehabilitation and six more years in a wheelchair learning how to eat, move, talk and even hear again. For any sporting dinners, charity vents or should you need to inspire and motivate an audience with someone who has been there and battled back from tough times, the former boxing professional Michael Watson makes a great choice.
