Syabira Yusoff was the winner of the Great British Bake Off in 2022, making her the first competitor of Malaysian descent to ever take home the prize. Throughout the season, judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood had faith in Yusoff’s baking abilities, leading to her being named star baker an astonishing three times and receiving a handshake from Hollywood during Halloween week. She is known for her use of strong and unique tastes. She sought to meld British classics with conventional Malaysian flavours during the entire season.
Yusoff relocated to the UK in 2013 to pursue her PhD studies, and she and her boyfriend, Bradley, live in London. She enjoys playing video games and frequently spends her evenings playing an online simulation of World War II, which she believes has helped teach her about leadership in the real world.
In 2017, Yusoff began baking for the very first time, making a red velvet cake since it made her think of the sweets she used to enjoy with her friends back home. She is all for incorporating Malaysian flavours into traditional British dishes; her personal favourite is chicken rendang cornish pasties. Yusoff is better able to comprehend the physics and chemistry of baking thanks to her expertise as a researcher and her knowledge of science. She enjoys experimenting in the kitchen to create the most intriguing flavour combinations and gathering her findings on crucial baking tips and methods.
