Charlie Sloth’s album The Plug made its debut over the weekend, released on the DJ’s own Grimey Limey record label. The album features a who’s who of the UK grime scene, with countless urban artists appearing in featured spots. Highlights include appearances from Lady Leshurr, Ghetts, Giggs, Bugzy Malone, Stormzy, and fellow MN2S artists WSTRN. Representing the USA are guest stars including Jadakiss and 21 Savage.
With an all-star lineup like this, Charlie Sloth has gained comparisons to US music kingpin DJ Khaled. In an interview with the Evening Standard, the 1Xtra presenter admitted he felt “cringe” introducing his own music on his show. Despite this, the album’s latest single ‘Walk Away’ is on the BBC Radio 1Xtra A List, meaning it gets as much airtime as artists with multiple albums under their belts, such as Jay Z and Drake.
As well as producing and co-writing his debut album and presenting his hit 1Xtra show, Charlie Sloth has been travelling the world playing DJ sets in some of the best venues out there. In 2016 he played 211 shows, as he tells the Evening Standard. And in the week before the interview he had performed in eight countries. With his debut album ready to climb the charts, there’s no doubt he’ll be just as in-demand in the future.
