About

Snap!, a German Eurodance group, was founded in 1989 by record producers Michael Münzing and Luca Anzilotti in Frankfurt, Germany. Adopting the aliases Benito Benites and John “Virgo” Garrett III, they aimed to avoid preconceived notions about German music. Their debut hit, “The Power,” released in 1990 and featuring American rapper Turbo B and singer Penny Ford, achieved significant international success. It reached number 2 in Germany, remaining there for five weeks, and topped the charts in the United Kingdom. In the U.S., “The Power” peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, selling over a million units.

Following the success of “The Power,” Jackie Harris, who mimed vocals in the music video, departed, and Penny Ford became the lead singer. She recorded the second single, “Ooops Up,” which also reached number 2 in Germany and entered the top five in the UK. Subsequent hits included “Cult of Snap” and “Mary Had a Little Boy.” The group’s debut album, “World Power,” achieved platinum status in Germany and gold in the UK and U.S. In 1991, Thea Austin joined, contributing to the songwriting for “Rhythm Is a Dancer.” After an initial delay, “Rhythm Is a Dancer” was released in July 1992 and became Snap!’s most successful track, reaching number 1 in Germany, the UK, France, and Switzerland, among other countries. The song sold 500,000 units in the U.S. and earned platinum certification in Germany and gold in the UK. Their second album, “The Madman’s Return,” also performed well, reaching number 3 in Germany and charting in the top 10 in multiple European countries.

Snap! continued to evolve, and for their third album, “Welcome to Tomorrow,” released in 1994, they recruited singer Summer (Paula Brown) and shifted towards a progressive house sound. The lead single, “Welcome to Tomorrow (Are You Ready?),” reached number 4 in Germany and number 6 in the UK. The group released a greatest hits compilation, “Snap! Attack: The Best of Snap!,” in 1996 before disbanding. Snap! made a comeback in 2000 with the track “Gimme a Thrill” and later released remix albums like “The Cult of Snap!” in 2003, with new versions of their hits charting again. In 2018, the rights to all Snap! recordings were transferred to BMG Rights Management.
