About

Clayton Holmes Aiken, born Clayton Holmes Grissom on November 30, 1978, in Raleigh, North Carolina, began his musical journey at a young age, singing in the Raleigh Boychoir and participating in school and church choirs, as well as local theater productions. He attended Leesville Road High School and took courses at Campbell University before enrolling at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. While in college, Aiken developed an interest in special education, working at the YMCA and as an assistant for a boy with autism. His passion for helping children with disabilities eventually led him to complete a bachelor’s degree in special education in December 2003, even as his music career was taking off.

Aiken’s career significantly changed in 2003 when he finished as the runner-up on the second season of “American Idol.” His powerful vocal performances and charismatic personality captivated audiences, leading to a multi-platinum debut album, “Measure of a Man,” released the same year. This album produced the hit single “This Is the Night” and sold 613,000 copies in its first week, marking the highest-selling debut for a solo artist in a decade. He followed this success with several other albums, including the record-breaking holiday album “Merry Christmas with Love” in 2004, and “A Thousand Different Ways” in 2006. Aiken further showcased his versatility by appearing on Broadway in “Spamalot” during 2008 and 2009, playing Sir Robin.

Beyond entertainment, Aiken has dedicated significant effort to activism. In 2003, he co-founded the Bubel/Aiken Foundation, later renamed the National Inclusion Project, which advocates for the integration of children with disabilities. His commitment to humanitarian causes was recognized in 2004 when he became a UNICEF ambassador, a role in which he traveled to tsunami-stricken Banda Aceh, northern Uganda, Afghanistan, Mexico, Somalia, and Kenya to raise awareness for children’s issues. In 2014, Aiken entered the political arena, running for the United States House of Representatives in North Carolina, and again in 2022. He has also authored a bestselling memoir, “Learning to Sing,” in 2004.
