Nicholas Bracegirdle, known professionally as Chicane, was born on February 28, 1971. He underwent training in classical guitar and piano from an early age. His initial musical influences were melodic composers such as Jean Michel Jarre and Vangelis, along with synthpop pioneer Vince Clarke. The dance track “Anthem” by N-Joi also proved influential, convincing him to pursue melodic electronic dance music. By the age of 12, he was actively creating music in recording studios and submitting demo tapes to various record labels. This early immersion in music laid the foundation for his future career.
Chicane’s career gained momentum in 1996 with his first release, the four-track EP *Cyanide Music Volume One*. This was followed by the *Offshore EP #1*, featuring the original version of “Offshore.” He later founded his own record label, Modena Records, which manages the rights and licensing for his music. In collaboration with Leo Elstob under the alias Disco Citizens, he produced “Right Here Right Now” in 1995. The Chicane project’s debut single, “Offshore,” released in 1996, saw success, reaching No. 12 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 5 on the US Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play charts in 1997. This track became a prominent Ibiza trance anthem, included in numerous compilations. His debut studio album, *Far from the Maddening Crowds*, released in September 1997, is considered a significant release within the trance music genre.
His collaborative efforts and subsequent releases further solidified his position in the music industry. In 1999, the single “Saltwater,” featuring Máire Brennan, surpassed his previous successes. A notable turning point was the collaboration with Bryan Adams on “Don’t Give Up,” which became a UK number-one hit in 2000 and achieved international chart success. His second studio album, *Behind the Sun*, released in 2000, was certified gold in the UK. Chicane continued to evolve his sound, moving from Ibiza-influenced tracks to a more songwriting-focused approach. Throughout his career, he has released nine studio albums, performed at major festivals, and expanded his reach through various musical projects and strategic partnerships.
