About

Helmut Josef Geier, known professionally as DJ Hell, was born on September 6, 1962, in Altenmarkt an der Alz, Bavaria, West Germany. His musical journey began in 1978, with an early exposure to German electronic music from the 1960s and 1970s, which emphasized experimentation over commercial aspirations. From 1983, he held a residency at Club Libella in Kirchweidach, where he developed an eclectic mixing style incorporating New Wave, Ska, Punk, Rockabilly, Hip hop, and Disco. This innovative approach continued through residencies at Munich’s Park Café and Tanzlokal Grössenwahn, where he became one of Germany’s first house DJs and organized the country’s first acid house party in 1987. His early career also saw him deejaying at Run–D.M.C.’s aftershow party, progressively integrating House and Techno into his sets by the end of the 1980s.

The 1990s marked a period of growth and influence for DJ Hell. He was a resident DJ at Munich’s Babalu Club and played a crucial role in establishing Peter Wacha’s Disko B label, serving as A&R manager until 1996. His first self-produced single, “My Definition of House Music” (R&S, 1992), sold over 100,000 copies, bringing him international recognition. He also held residencies at prominent techno clubs like Munich’s Ultraschall and Berlin’s E-Werk, WMF, and Tresor. In 1992, he became A&R manager for Logic Records in Frankfurt and compiled the world’s first trance compilation, “Logic Trance.” A significant turning point was his year-long residency at Limelight in New York City with Jeff Mills in 1993, followed by a period at Berlin’s Hard Wax record store. His debut album, “Geteert & Gefedert,” was released on Disko B in 1994. In 1996, he founded International Deejay Gigolos, a label that became instrumental in the Electroclash movement, releasing works from artists such as Jeff Mills, Miss Kittin & The Hacker, and Laurent Garnier. The label, for which he served as mastermind, A&R, and art director, released over 300 singles and albums between 1996 and 2016. His second album, “Munich Machine” (1998), was recognized by The Guardian as a catalyst for electroclash.
