Jeffrey Allen Townes, known professionally as DJ Jazzy Jeff, was born on January 22, 1965, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His interest in deejaying began at the age of ten, where he observed and learned from local DJs at summer block parties. He quickly developed a reputation within his community as a DJ for school events and block parties. Early in his career, he became recognized for popularizing the ‘transformer scratch,’ a technique he is credited with alongside DJ Spinbad and DJ Cash Money. This innovative scratching method expanded the tonal range and rhythmic possibilities for DJs, contributing to early turntablism.
In 1985, Townes formed the hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince with Will Smith. The group released their debut single, “Girls Ain’t Nothing but Trouble,” in 1986, which gained significant attention. Their 1988 album, “He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper,” solidified their mainstream success, achieving multi-platinum status. The album featured the hit single “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” for which they received the first Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance in 1989. They continued to achieve commercial success with their music, including their 1991 hit “Summertime,” which earned them a second Grammy Award and peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Concurrent with his musical career, DJ Jazzy Jeff also ventured into acting, portraying a character named Jazz, Will Smith’s best friend, on the popular sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”
Following the disbandment of DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, Townes focused on his career as a record producer, establishing ‘A Touch of Jazz’ production company in Philadelphia. He has been instrumental in the development and production for various R&B, soul, and neo-soul artists, including Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, and Eric Roberson. Despite pursuing individual careers, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith have maintained a close friendship, occasionally collaborating on music and performing together at live events, such as the Live 8 concert in 2005 and several European shows in 2017. He has also been featured as a playable character in the video game “DJ Hero” and continues to release music and tour internationally, documenting his experiences in his web series “Vinyl Destination.”
