Josue Vargas isn’t nicknamed “The Prodigy” for nothing: with his track record in professional boxing, many predict him to be the future Junior Welterweight Champion.
Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Vargas relocated to the Bronx, New York in order to pursue his dream of becoming a professional boxer. After getting signed to Mayweather Promotions, this southpaw debuted in the ring in 2015. For his very first fight, he went against Jorge Ernesto de Lara, winning the match by knockout and proving himself as a forced to be reckoned with. In the next five years, he’d perform eight more knockouts.
To date, Vargas has only lost one bout in the history of his professional career, and he’s shown no signs of slowing down. In one of his more recent matches, he went on to defeat his opponent, Salvador Briceno, by unanimous decision, despite getting his teeth knocked out during the fight, leading ESPN to write a feature article about the match.
With his growing prominence in the boxing industry, Vargas has garnered quite the fanbase. On Instagram alone, he has nearly 100K followers. There, he promotes future fights, typically walking out to “I’m Not Afraid” by Eminem to get pumped up for a match.
Outside of being an impressive Super Lightweight, Vargas stays athletic by playing baseball in his spare time.
