About

Ministry of Sound was founded on September 21, 1991, in London, UK, by James Palumbo, Justin Berkmann, and Humphrey Waterhouse. The initial concept, inspired by New York’s Paradise Garage, prioritized an unparalleled sound system experience over all other aspects of a nightclub. This vision led to a significant investment of £500,000 into the club’s sound system and an equal amount in soundproofing, allowing the venue to reach 156 decibels without disturbing its surroundings. Early sets from American house and garage DJs such as Larry Levan, David Morales, Roger Sanchez, and Tony Humphries, alongside Paul Oakenfold, established Ministry of Sound as a significant clubbing venue. It has consistently attracted a large audience, hosting approximately 300,000 clubbers annually and featuring prominent DJs like Adam Beyer, DJ Harvey, Dixon, Marshmello, Jozeff, and Pete Tong.

Over the years, Ministry of Sound expanded its operations beyond the nightclub. In 1993, it launched its compilation album business with “Sessions Volume One,” which achieved commercial success and set the stage for selling over 55 million compilation albums worldwide. The brand also ventured into artist and repertoire (A&R) with its record labels, starting with ‘Sound of Ministry’ and later consolidating under ‘Ministry of Sound Recordings’ in 2009. This label signed artists like Example, who achieved multiple UK number 1 records and platinum albums, and London Grammar, whose debut album “If You Wait” gained platinum status in the UK. In 2016, the record label’s A&R and compilations business was acquired by Sony Music Entertainment, while the core Ministry of Sound operations remained independent.

The organization has continuously innovated and diversified its offerings. In 2016, Ministry of Sound collaborated with Dolby Laboratories to integrate Dolby Atmos sound technology into its main room, “The Box,” creating a 64-speaker, 22-channel sound system, a first for the industry. The brand also extended into fitness with a studio offering high-intensity interval workouts, and launched “The Ministry,” a private members’ club and shared workspace for creative businesses in 2018. Through its Ministry of Sound and Hed Kandi brands, the group conducts around 500 international tour events annually, including appearances at major festivals like Ultra Europe, solidifying its global presence.
