About

Shoom was a weekly all-night dance music event in London, England, active from September 1987 to early 1990. Founded by Danny Rampling, an unknown DJ and record producer at the time, and managed by his wife Jenni, Shoom began its operations in a 300-capacity basement gym on Southwark Street in South London. The club is widely credited for introducing the acid house movement to the UK, an influential period characterized by its unique musical style and inclusive atmosphere.

Initially, Rampling and Terry Farley served as the in-house DJs, spinning a mix of Chicago house, Balearic, and Detroit techno, alongside contemporary pop and post-punk tracks. The club’s visual identity featured modernist and minimalist designs, enhanced by flavored smoke machines and strobe lights, creating an immersive experience for attendees. The early success of Shoom led to rapid growth, necessitating a move to larger venues. By May 1988, it relocated to the Raw venue on Tottenham Court Road, and later to The Park Nightclub in Kensington and Busby’s on Charing Cross Road, to accommodate its expanding popularity. These moves saw a transition from Saturday to Thursday nights, and eventually to Wednesday nights, consistently drawing large crowds.

Shoom’s impact extended beyond its physical locations, fostering a cultural shift that championed unity and self-expression. The club cultivated a distinct dress code characterized by baggy clothing, tie-dye, and dayglo colors, which became emblematic of the larger rave scene. Despite its eventual closure in early 1990 due to increased police scrutiny of drug use and the mainstreaming of electronic music, Shoom’s legacy as a foundational pillar of modern rave culture remains significant. It influenced artists like New Order and Primal Scream, who drew inspiration from its unique sounds and atmosphere for their respective works.
