Dave Angel collaborated with V Recordings for a Liquid D&B DJ Set in January 2021, indicating his diverse musical interests beyond techno. He also had a 'Bryan I'm hearing some great liquid tracks around can you send me a folder of some you faves' discussion which led to his Liquid D&B mix.
David Angelico Nicholas Gooden, professionally known as Dave Angel, was born on May 13, 1966, in Chelsea, London, England. His early musical education was shaped by his father, a jazz musician, and a diverse exposure to soul music and funk. Beginning to play instruments, including percussion, at 14, his unique journey into music production started with an electronic keyboard and a double tape deck. He famously created his ‘Nightmare mix’ by combining a bassline and drum track with Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”. This unofficial mix gained significant attention, leading to its official release and success, reaching number 23 on the UK Singles Chart.
Following the success of his debut, Angel received numerous invitations and established himself within the European music scene. He became a part of the Phaze One team alongside influential drum & bass DJs Fabio and Grooverider. As a producer, he released EPs such as “The Family” on Apollo and “Royal Techno” on Rotation Records. Through his label, Rotation Records, he provided opportunities for many emerging producers, including Paul Hazel, Cisco Ferreira, Vince Watson, Samuel L. Session, Steve Rachmad, and Sharpside. His work extended to prominent labels like Black Market, Love, Rotation, and the Belgian R&S Records.
In 1995, Studio!K7 released his CD “X-Mix-4 – Beyond The Heavens,” featuring global tracks and his remix for Sun Electric. The late 1990s saw Angel exploring funk influences, resulting in tracks from the LP *Globetrotting*, including “Tokyo Stealth Fighter,” “This is Disco,” and “Funk Music.” He established a significant international presence, making appearances at major events and festivals worldwide, solidifying his status as an important figure in international techno. Dave Angel is also the father of UK rapper Fabien Darcy. He continues to release music, with an upcoming release on Rekids in early 2023.
