Amber Dawn Coffman was born in Austin, Texas, on June 15, 1984. Her early life involved moving frequently, with her attending at least 11 different schools across Ohio, Texas, Arizona, and California. She developed an appreciation for R&B in the 1990s before shifting her focus to rock music during her teenage years. While living in San Diego as a teenager, Coffman worked at a grocery store and was a guitarist for Sleeping People, an instrumental math rock band. This early exposure to the music scene laid the groundwork for her professional career.
In 2006, at the age of 22, Coffman relocated to New York and joined the indie rock band Dirty Projectors as a guitarist and vocalist. Her tenure with Dirty Projectors began with their 2006 tour for the album *Rise Above*. She was an integral part of the band through several significant releases, including *Bitte Orca* (2009), the collaboration with Björk, *Mount Wittenberg Orca* (2010), *Swing Lo Magellan* (2012), and the *About to Die* EP (2012). Her distinctive voice, particularly on tracks like “Stillness Is the Move,” contributed to the band’s sound and helped them bridge avant-garde music with more accessible styles. During her time with Dirty Projectors, Coffman also continued to work on her own musical material, developing demos for a solo career.
Coffman embarked on her solo journey while still with Dirty Projectors, beginning to write her debut album in 2011. Her first solo album, *City of No Reply*, was released on June 2, 2017, through Columbia Records.
