Iron Cross, affectionately known as IC, stands as an enduring symbol of Myanmar’s rock music scene, forged by the visionary lead guitarist Saw Bwe Hmu. Since its inception in 1989, IC has captivated audiences with their electrifying performances and anthemic melodies, cementing their status as pioneers of the genre.
Comprising a stellar lineup including Chit San Maung (lead guitarist), Khin Maung Thant (bass guitarist), Banyar Naing (keyboard player), and Kha Yan (drummer), IC has remained a formidable force in Myanmar’s music industry. Their collaboration with iconic Myanmar singers such as Lay Phyu, Myo Gyi, and Ah Nge has solidified their place as legends in the country’s musical landscape.
Despite facing scrutiny from the international community due to their emblem’s resemblance to a Nazi party symbol, IC has persevered, with lead guitarist Chit San Maung clarifying that they were unaware of the symbol’s taboo status. Originally named ‘Holy Cross,’ the band rebranded as ‘Iron Cross’ to broaden their appeal and reach a wider audience.
IC’s influence extends far beyond Myanmar’s borders, with global tours taking them to the United States, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and various European countries. Whether entertaining overseas Burmese communities or fundraising for charitable causes, IC’s commitment to their fans and social causes is unwavering.
In 2010, IC celebrated their 20th anniversary with a monumental live concert at Thuwunna National Indoor Stadium, showcasing their enduring popularity and impact. Their dedication to philanthropy was evident in 2015 when they raised funds for Aung San Suu Kyi’s Education Foundation through a memorable music performance.
Through their passion for music and philanthropy, Iron Cross continues to inspire audiences, leaving an indelible mark on Myanmar’s cultural landscape and beyond.
