Park Ji-min, known mononymously as Jimin, was born on October 13, 1995, in Busan, South Korea. His early education included Hodong Elementary School and Yonsan Middle School, followed by dedicated training in popping and locking at Just Dance Academy. Prior to his debut, Jimin was a top student in the modern dance department at Busan High School of Arts, where he studied contemporary dance. A teacher encouraged him to join an entertainment company, leading him to Big Hit Entertainment. After passing auditions in 2012, he transferred to Korean Arts High School, graduating in 2014.
Jimin made his debut in 2013 as a vocalist and dancer in the South Korean boy band BTS with the song “No More Dream” from their first single, ‘2 Cool 4 Skool.’ He was the last trainee to join BTS, spending a concise six months as a trainee before his debut. With BTS, he released several solo tracks, including “Lie” in 2016 from the album ‘Wings,’ “Serendipity” in 2017 from the ‘Love Yourself: Her’ EP, and “Filter” in 2020 off ‘Map of the Soul: 7.’ These tracks achieved significant chart success, with “Filter” charting on the Billboard Hot 100, marking him as a prominent solo artist within the group. He also co-wrote and co-produced “Friends” from ‘Map of the Soul: 7,’ which was featured in the Marvel Studios film ‘Eternals.’
Transitioning into solo endeavors, Jimin released his first credited solo song, “Promise,” in 2018 on SoundCloud, breaking records for 24-hour debut streams. His debut solo album, ‘Face,’ released in 2023, debuted at number one in South Korea and Japan and at number two on the US Billboard 200, making him the highest-charting Korean solo artist on the latter chart. The album’s single, “Like Crazy,” notably became the first song by a Korean solo artist to debut at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. In 2024, his second album, ‘Muse,’ and its lead single “Who” also achieved significant global chart success, with “Who” debuting at number one on Billboard’s Global 200 and becoming the longest-charting song by a Korean artist on the Billboard Hot 100. Jimin has also engaged in philanthropic efforts, including substantial donations to education and various charitable organizations.
