Drawing comparisons to trap pioneers Future and Young Thug, Jon Z’s vocal versatility and penchant for razor-sharp flows place him among the likes of Bad Bunny and Ozuna as a certified heavyweight in the Latin trap and reggaeton scene. Supplemented by a series of high-octane solo efforts since 2014, his unique, eccentric presence both in videos and on the mic secured Z features from Latin superstars Enrique Iglesias and De La Ghetto in the first few months of 2019 alone.
Marking his entrance into the music scene by recording a series of freestyles on his phone, often sat in his car, the young and charismatic Puerto Rican graduated from YouTube to a record deal in 2014. On discovering his lyrical talent and singular style of performance, Chosen Few Emeralds Entertainment boss Boy Wonder didn’t hesitate before bringing Z into the fold, opening the door for a debut mixtape and a stream of singles. The hazy, low-slung “0 Sentimientos” was followed by the propulsive “Viajo Sin Ver”, racking up hundreds of millions of plays across YouTube, Soundcloud and Spotify. His two full-length efforts, 2017’s JonTrapVolta and 2018’s Super Saiyan Flow, have showcased the rapper’s full range while proving his ability to deviate successfully from the classic trap framework.
Needless to say, Z has no plans to take his foot off the gas. His 2019 single “Despues Que Te Perdi” and its Enrique Iglesias-featured remix hit combined views of over 40 million in the space of a few weeks, leaving no doubt that Jon Z remains one of the hottest talents in contemporary Latin music.
