Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, known professionally as Lana Del Rey, was born on June 21, 1985, in Manhattan, New York City. She grew up in Lake Placid, New York, where her father worked in furniture and later became a domain investor, and her mother was a schoolteacher. Del Rey’s early life included singing in her church choir. At 14 or 15, her parents sent her to Kent School, a boarding school in Connecticut, to address issues with alcoholism. She became sober in 2003. After a gap year spent with her aunt and uncle on Long Island, where she learned guitar, she began writing songs and performing in New York City clubs under various names, including ‘Sparkle Jump Rope Queen’ and ‘Lizzy Grant and the Phenomena’. She attended Fordham University, majoring in philosophy.
Del Rey initiated her music career in 2005 as May Jailer, recording an acoustic album titled ‘Sirens’. In 2007, she signed a recording contract with 5 Points Records for $10,000. Under the name Lizzy Grant, she released the EP ‘Kill Kill’ in 2008 and the album ‘Lana Del Ray A.K.A. Lizzy Grant’ in 2010. Her breakthrough occurred in 2011 with the viral success of her self-made music video for ‘Video Games’ on YouTube, which led to a recording deal with Stranger Records, then Polydor and Interscope. Her second studio album, ‘Born to Die’ (2012), achieved significant commercial success, topping charts in 11 countries and selling 3.4 million copies in 2012. It became the second album by a woman to spend over 500 weeks on the US Billboard 200 by 2023.

Her ninth studio album, ‘Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd’, was released in 2023 and earned her five Grammy nominations. In 2026, she is set to release ‘Stove’, her first country album.
