About

Martha Emily Davis was born on January 19, 1951, in Berkeley, California. She began taking guitar and ballet lessons at age eight. After facing personal challenges in her early life, including becoming a mother at 15 and the death of her mother, Davis turned her focus to music in the early 1970s. In 1971, she joined The Warfield Foxes in Berkeley. The band later moved to Los Angeles in 1975, eventually becoming The Motels. Despite initial difficulties in securing a recording contract, the band gained recognition through local performances.

The Motels signed with Capitol Records in May 1979, releasing their self-titled debut album the same year. Their second album, “Careful,” followed in 1980, achieving international chart success with singles like “Total Control” and “Danger.” The band experienced further critical and commercial success in the 1980s. Their third album, “All Four One” (1982), produced the hit single “Only the Lonely,” which reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. Davis received a Best Performance in a Music Video award at the American Music Awards in 1982 for “Only the Lonely.” The album “Little Robbers” (1983) delivered another Top 10 hit with “Suddenly Last Summer.” Davis embarked on a solo career in 1987 with the album “Policy” after dissolving The Motels.

Davis reformed The Motels in 1998, initially touring as “The Motels featuring Martha Davis” and later as “Martha Davis and The Motels.” This new iteration released several albums, including “This” (2008), “Apocalypso” (2011), “If Not Now Then When” (2017), and “The Last Few Beautiful Days” (2018). In addition to her work with The Motels, Davis has released solo albums such as “Beautiful Life” (2008) and a children’s music album, “Red Frog Presents: 16 Songs For Parents and Children” (2010). She has also contributed music to film soundtracks, including “Madhouse” (1990) and “Miracle Beach” (1992). In 2005, she performed with Teatro ZinZanni and appeared on the television show “Hit Me, Baby, One More Time” with The Motels.
