About

Martin James Smith, born on July 6, 1970, in Littlehampton, West Sussex, England, has established a significant career in music as a vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, and producer. Before becoming a full-time musician, Smith worked as a sound engineer at ICC studios in Eastbourne. In 1992, he co-founded The Cutting Edge Band with Stewart Smith and Tim Jupp, which later became known as Delirious?. A pivotal moment in his career occurred in 1995 when a near-fatal car accident during his recovery inspired him to pursue music professionally, leading to the song “August 30.” The band Delirious? achieved full-time status in 1996, producing well-known songs such as “I Could Sing of Your Love Forever,” “History Maker,” and “Did You Feel the Mountains Tremble?”.

During his time with Delirious?, Smith contributed to numerous albums including “King of Fools” (1997), “Mezzamorphis” (1999), and “Kingdom of Comfort” (2008). The band also toured globally, performing at significant venues and events, including Glastonbury’s main Pyramid Stage and opening for acts like Bon Jovi and Bryan Adams. Delirious? released seven singles that charted in the top 40 of the UK charts. After Delirious? disbanded in 2009, Smith transitioned to a solo career, focusing on his own musical projects and charitable efforts like CompassionArt. He released a series of EPs and albums, including “God’s Great Dance Floor: Movements One through Four” (2012-2013) and full-length albums “God’s Great Dance Floor – Step 01” and “Step 02” (2013). His solo work continued with albums like “Iron Lung” (2019), “Exalt” (2020), and “Dancing in the Fire” (2022).

Throughout his career, Smith has accumulated significant achievements, with millions of music sales, achieving both platinum and gold status, and over 300 million streams. His albums have frequently topped Christian music charts. He has been nominated for multiple Dove Awards and won the ‘International Act’ award. His work has been featured in publications such as Billboard, Q Magazine, Amazon Music, and the LA Times. Smith has also collaborated with various artists, including writing three songs for Michael W. Smith’s “Healing Rain” album (2004) and contributing to CompassionArt projects. His most recent collaborations include “Holy” with Kari Jobe and “Lead me to the cross” with Brooke Ligertwood.
