Run-DMC

Run-DMC became the first hip-hop group to achieve a Gold record with their eponymous debut album, ‘Run-D.M.C.’, released in 1984, following the success of their breakthrough debut single ‘It’s Like That/Sucker MCs’ which peaked at No. 15 on the R&B charts in late 1983. The group, consisting of Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels, and Jason Mizell, quickly established a distinct musical style, moving away from disco and funk towards an aggressive, hard-hitting approach that laid the foundation for hardcore hip-hop. Their innovative track ‘Rock Box’ (1984) successfully fused hip-hop with hard rock, establishing a core sound for the group and paving the way for the rap rock sub-genre of the 1990s.

Although the group formally ceased activities, Joseph Simmons and Darryl McDaniels have made sporadic appearances together, celebrating their legacy and engaging with fans. This included a poignant final performance in August 2023 at the Hip Hop 50 celebration concert, reinforcing their lasting influence on music and culture worldwide.
