The Kooks formed in Brighton, England, in 2004. The current lineup consists of Luke Pritchard on vocals and guitar, Hugh Harris on bass, guitar, and synthesiser, and Alexis Nuñez on drums and percussion. The band’s early days were marked by the members (Paul Garred, Luke Pritchard, and Hugh Harris) meeting at the BRIT School in Croydon and later Max Rafferty joining them at the British and Irish Modern Music Institute (BIMM) in 2002. Their shared musical influences included The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Police, and David Bowie. The band quickly garnered attention after forming, signing a deal with Virgin Records within four months of their inception after being spotted at the Brighton Free Butt Festival in 2005. They initially focused on live performances and songwriting before recording their debut album, which allowed their style to develop organically.
The Kooks achieved significant critical and commercial success with their debut album, “Inside In/Inside Out,” released in 2006. This album was certified five-times platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), and two times platinum by the Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA). The album produced successful singles such as “Naïve” and “She Moves in Her Own Way,” which both charted in the top ten. This period also saw them win Best UK & Ireland Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2006 and receive a BRIT Awards nomination for “She Moves in Her Own Way” in 2007. Their second album, “Konk,” released in 2008, debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and achieved gold status in the UK and Ireland, with first-week sales of 65,000 units.
Throughout their career, The Kooks have released several other studio albums, including “Junk of the Heart” (2011), “Listen” (2014), and “Let’s Go Sunshine” (2018). Their most recent album, “10 Tracks to Echo in the Dark,” was released in 2022 and reached No. 32 on the UK Albums Chart. The band has experienced lineup changes, with bassist Max Rafferty departing in 2008 and Paul Garred leaving in 2012, both being replaced by new members. Their music has evolved across various genres, including indie pop, pop-rock, indie rock, Britpop, reggae, ska, funk, and hip-hop, while maintaining their core identity.
