Aaron Calder, born in Brighton, has become known for his personal journey of health transformation and subsequent advocacy for veganism and addiction recovery. Seven years ago, he experienced a severe health crisis, being hospitalized for various conditions including a kidney infection, malnutrition, gout, and significant liver damage due to alcohol addiction. Doctors informed him that he was fortunate to be alive and that any further alcohol consumption would be fatal. This turning point led him to complete abstinence from alcohol, a commitment he has maintained since.
Several years after this critical health event, Calder decided to explore veganism, initially for a two-week trial. He quickly observed substantial improvements in his health, including clearer skin, weight loss, improved alertness, and increased energy. Motivated by these positive changes, he fully embraced a vegan diet. This dietary shift had a profound impact on his liver health; his FibroScan score, which initially stood at a critical 75 (the worst possible), dramatically improved to 44 after going vegan, and subsequently to 39, then 31, and finally 29 in later check-ups. This remarkable recovery, alongside improvements in cholesterol and blood pressure, occurred despite initial skepticism from medical professionals regarding the vegan diet. His personal experience led him to become a full-time food blogger, sharing vegan recipes and products on his website and social media channels to inspire others.
Calder’s career progression demonstrates a shift from personal struggle to public advocacy. After rebuilding his health, he began openly sharing his story, particularly on platforms like Instagram, where he posts about his vegan meals and recipes. He recognized an obligation to show how a vegan diet could lead to significant health improvements. He also transitioned into a role as a Fundraising Officer at Animal Aid, an organization dedicated to animal welfare. Furthermore, his own experiences prompted him to establish “Aaron’s Alcohol and Addiction Support,” offering guidance and reassurance to individuals struggling with addiction, utilizing his personal journey to help others avoid similar health crises. His work highlights the interconnectedness of dietary choices, physical health, and personal well-being.
