Born on February 5, 1993, in Brno, Czech Republic, Adam Ondra began his climbing journey at the age of six, influenced by his parents who were also climbers. By age eight in 2001, he was onsighting 7b+ (5.12c) routes, demonstrating early promise. His progression continued rapidly; by age nine in 2002, he onsighted 7c+ (5.13a) and redpointed 8a (5.13b). In 2004, at age eleven, he onsighted 8a+ (5.13c) and redpointed 8c (5.14b). By age thirteen in 2006, Ondra redpointed his first 9a (5.14d) route, ‘Martin Krpan’ at Misja Pec, marking him as a significant talent in the climbing world. He pursued higher education at Masaryk University, balancing his academic life with an intense climbing career.
Ondra’s career continued to ascend with notable achievements in competition climbing. In 2007 and 2008, he won the IFSC World Youth Championship in his category. His professional debut in the Lead Climbing World Cup in 2009 saw him securing first place. The following year, 2010, he achieved a historic milestone by winning the Bouldering World Cup, becoming the first athlete to win World Cups in both lead and bouldering disciplines. His proficiency across various climbing styles, including sport climbing, bouldering, and big wall climbing, has led many to consider him the world’s strongest climber. His professional career is marked by continuous progression in grading and technique, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in rock climbing.
His contributions to rock climbing include multiple first ascents and record-breaking climbs. In 2012, he established the world’s first 9b+ (5.15c) route, ‘Change’, and in 2017, he made history again with ‘Silence’, the world’s first 9c (5.15d). He is also the first climber to flash a 9a+ (5.15a) route with ‘Supercrackinette’ in 2018. Beyond sport climbing, Ondra completed the second free ascent of ‘The Dawn Wall’ on El Capitan, a 32-pitch 5.14d big wall route, in just 8 days in 2016. His extensive list of ascents includes 1,550 sport routes between grades 8a and 9c by late 2018, showcasing his consistent performance at the highest level.
