Alpine ski racer Alexandros Ioannis “AJ” Ginnis is a Greek-American expert in the technical competitions, particularly slalom. In February 2023, he won his first World Cup podium, after making his World Cup debut in December 2014. Then, in the 2023 World Championships, he took home the silver medal.
Ginnis earned his first World Cup points on December 22, 2016, as he placed 26th in the slalom at Madonna di Campiglio. He qualified to compete for Team USA in the World Championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland, during that 2017 season. His career has been marred by injuries, and the same knee of his has undergone more than five surgeries. He was sidelined for the 2018 and 2019 seasons due to knee ailments. Ginnis competed for Dartmouth College in the 2020 season while re-qualifying for the USA’s World Cup squad.
By placing eleventh in a slalom in Flachau, Austria, on January 17, 2021, Ginnis became the first Greek alpine racer to earn World Cup points for his country. He received accolades from the Hellenic Olympic team for his outstanding work and contributions to Greek sport. Ginnis finished second in a slalom on February 4, 2023, to earn his first World Cup podium position in Chamonix, France. He became the first Greek skier in history to place on the podium in an alpine World Cup competition. He went on to win silver in the slalom two weeks later at the World Championships in Courchevel.
