Benedict Wong’s long and varied acting career has seen him plot a course from being a Shakespearean actor and bit-player in British television series to becoming an award-nominated sci-fi TV and movie actor in America. He is currently perhaps best known for playing Wong in Marvel films such as Doctor Strange, Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. He has also appeared in major American series such as Marco Polo and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. He received an honourable mention at the 2020 Gold List Awards for his acting in the fantasy film Nine Days.
Wong hails from the Greater Manchester area of northwest England and trained as an actor in the city of Salford. His television career began in the early 1990s with roles in popular shows of the time, such as Last of the Summer Wine and Pie in the Sky. However, he also played Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre, appearing in the likes of The Merchant of Venice and Anthony & Cleopatra. Fans of cult British comedy will also recognise him from his role as Errol Spears in the late Sean Lock’s sitcom, 15 Storeys High and as Lau from The Wrong Mans.
Wong’s reputation in America began to grow thanks to roles such as that of Kublai Khan in Netflix’s major historical drama series Marco Polo. However, his induction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Wong proved the seal of stateside approval, and he has been increasingly in-demand over there ever since. Proof of this can be found on his Instagram account, where he has over 900,000 followers.
