Television writer and producer Bill Oakley is best known for his time on the award-winning show The Simpsons. Originally from Maryland, Oakley began his career writing on shows such as Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman. After a moved to New York in 1989, Oakley came to writing for the game show Ha! as well as for magazines such as the National Lampoon and Spy.
Known for his legendary collaborations with writing partner Josh Weinstein, the duo came to writing a spec script for Seinfeld, which resulted in being noticed more widely in the comedy scene. The pair consequently became writers for The Simpsons in 1992, becoming executive producers and showrunners from 1995 onwards. By the time Oakley left in 1997, he and his team had won 3 Emmys, including for Outstanding Animated program, and a Peabody award in 1996. The following years saw Oakley, together with Weinstein, become sought after writers and producers. In 2001 they became consulting producers on Futurama, as well as writing pilots for shows such as 22 Birthdays, Business Class and The Funkhousers, as well as films such as The Optimist and Reprecht. In 2003 he became executive producer of the TV series The Mullets.
Since, Oakley has been best known for his work on the acclaimed comedy series Portlandia, which he began working on in 2012, becoming a co-executive producer in 2013. With the team, he won the Writers Guild of America Award for Outstanding Achievement in Writing Comedy. Most recently he has worked as a producer and writer for the series Disenchantment, once again with Weinstein.
