Bokhee An

Bokhee An, also known by her American name Kathy C. An, was born on August 16, 1939, in Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. From a young age, she demonstrated a strong will, pursuing education in Seoul against societal expectations that favored marriage. Her career in healthcare began without formal training when she impressed an OB-GYN with her abilities, securing a position in surgical equipment sterilization. In 1968, she moved to California and after working several jobs, she became a cardiovascular scrub tech in Santa Barbara. Her extensive experience in real-life surgical settings spans over 50 years.

An’s television career commenced in 1983 with a debut on ABC’s ‘Ryan’s Four.’ She has since appeared in over 600 episodes across various television shows and films, including notable roles in ‘Family Ties,’ ‘Doogie Howser, M.D.,’ and ‘Nip/Tuck.’ A turning point in her acting career occurred when Linda Klein, a registered nurse and the medical advisor for ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ recognized her unique background. An’s real-life experience as a scrub nurse made her an invaluable asset to the cast, providing a level of realism to the show’s medical procedures.

Since its premiere on March 27, 2005, Bokhee An has been an integral part of ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ appearing in over 260 episodes as Nurse Bokhee. Her portrayal has been characterized by understated presence, often conveying emotions through facial expressions and reactions, which has resonated with audiences and staff. She also appeared in a 2012 episode of the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ spinoff ‘Private Practice’ and a 2018 episode of ‘Grey’s Anatomy: The Webisodes.’ An retired from active scrub nursing in 2015 but continues her work on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, solidifying her status as a beloved and enduring character on the series.
