Freestyle skier Daniela Maier is a German athlete who participated in the Olympic Winter Games in 2022. At the 2015 FIS Freestyle Junior World Championships, Maier participated in the ski cross competition and was awarded a silver medal for her efforts.
Maier competed for Germany in the ski cross competition at the 2022 Winter Olympics, where she ended up finishing in fourth place in the main final. In the beginning, Fanny Smith was given a warning, and Maier was given the bronze medal. The Freestyle and Freeski Appeals Commission decided to reverse this decision at a later time. Due to “the close proximity of the racers at that moment resulting in action that was neither intended nor preventable,” it was judged that Maier properly finished in fourth place. On the website of the FIS, this decision has been reflected.
As the issue of the return and redistribution of medals is within the exclusive competence of the IOC, the FIS Appeals Commission did not mention anything about the medals and their redistribution in its decision, and the IOC has the last word in this issue. The agreement to split third place between Smith and Maier, with each athlete receiving two bronze medals from the International Olympic Committee, was announced by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on the 13th of December 2022.
