United States Dr. Danny Sands is a primary care physician and medical informatics specialist, leveraging technology to improve healthcare delivery and patient engagement.
Dr. Sands was one of the principal architects of the primary care component of the hospital-wide computing system at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he spent almost 14 years developing and implementing innovative systems, including clinical decision support systems, an EHR, and one of the nation's first patient portals.
Dr. Sands is a co-founder and the Board Chair of the Society for Participatory Medicine, a central body for scholars and practitioners advancing the informatics field. He is passionate about collaboration in healthcare and participatory medicine.
Dr. Sands was recognized as one of HealthTech's 30 health IT influencers to watch in 2021, providing insights on trends and challenges in digital health.

Dr. Daniel Zev Sands, born in April 1962, completed his undergraduate and medical training at Brown and Ohio State Universities. He then moved to Boston for housestaff and informatics training at Boston University and Beth Israel Hospital. Dr. Sands is currently on the faculty of medicine at Harvard Medical School. He held various leadership roles at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, including Director of the Douglas Porter Fellowship in Clinical Computing, Clinical Informatics Advisor to the Electronic Patient Record Project, Medical Director of Beth Israel’s Clinical Workstation Initiative, Director of Electronic Patient Records in the Center for Clinical Computing, and Clinical Director of Electronic Patient Records and Communication.
Dr. Sands is recognized as one of the principal architects of the primary care component of the hospital-wide computing system at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. This system is used by the majority of primary care physicians in place of traditional paper records. He designed and implemented programs for clinical formula calculations, which are accessed over 600 times per week for clinical and educational purposes. A consistent advocate for electronic mail in patient care, his publication with Dr. Beverley Kane established definitive recommendations for its use in medical practice. Later, Dr. Sands focused on enhancing physician-patient communication through PatientSite, a patient-oriented website providing access to electronic medical records and a communication channel with physicians. This program is noted for its patient-centered communication excellence.
His career progression also includes leadership positions at Zix Corporation and Cisco. Dr. Sands is a co-founder and Board Chair of the Society for Participatory Medicine. He has maintained a primary care practice for over twenty years, integrating health IT extensively into his work.
