Diane Guerrero is an acclaimed actress and author, known for roles in shows such as Orange is the New Black and Jane the Virgin. Known also for her powerful memoir In the Country We Love and her award-winning advocacy work, she is fast becoming one of the most respected and exciting acting talents to emerge in recent years.
Born in the United States to Colombian parents, Guerrero was left without her immediate family at age 14 when her parents and older brother were denied citizenship and deported. Her experience has informed much of her work, and in 2016 she released the memoir In the Country We Love: My Family Divided about her experience as the daughter of undocumented migrants. She has become a staunch advocate for immigration reform, was named a Presidential Ambassador for Citizenship and Naturalisation during the administration of President Obama, and was honoured with a Philip Burton Immigration and Civil Rights Award for her work.
Guerrero studied acting at Susan Batson Studios, and in 2012 was cast in new Netflix comedy-drama Orange is the New Black, playing inmate Maritza Ramos. The series was an instant hit on its release, and Guerrero and the rest of the ensemble earned two Screen Actors Guild Awards for their performances. Elsewhere, she has played the recurring role of Lina on The CW’s romantic dramedy Jane the Virgin, Crazy Jane in the DC Universe series Doom Patrol, and Sofia in the Tracy Letts-inspired sitcom Superior Donuts. She has featured in films including Emoticon ;), Killerman and Happy Yummy Chicken, and served as the host of two seasons of Hello Sunshine’s How It Is podcast.
