Once nominated by his fellow countryfolk as one of the top five Greatest Canadians of All-Time, Dr David Suzuki is a world-leading environmentalist, scientist and broadcaster. He is a Companion of the Order of Canada, the highest award a Canadian can be given, has been awarded multiple times by the United Nations, and has been laden with honorary degrees from universities the world over. Professor Emeritus at Vancouver’s University of British Columbia, he has educated students and audiences on the dangers of climate change across the world.
Although one of the world’s foremost academics, Dr Suzuki is also a familiar face to non-scholars. He presented the hit television series, The Nature of Things, which has been broadcast in more than 40 countries. He has written over 50 books, all of which seek to educate and inform people about the fragility of our environment. Some of his best-known works include From Naked Ape to Superspecies, The Sacred Balance, and Letters to My Grandchildren. He has written extensively for children, including a best-selling series of books entitled Looking at Senses.
Dr Suzuki is a passionate climate change activist and spokesman, vociferously highlighting that scientific evidence shows climate change to be a very real, very present, very man-made danger to the planet. He has also passionately spoken out about the dangers of genetically-modified food and nuclear power. He may be in his early 80s but, with the desire to educate and affect change still burning brightly inside him, don’t expect Dr Suzuki to take it easy any time soon.
