Eliezer Yudkowsky was born on September 11, 1979, in Chicago, Illinois. He is an autodidact who did not pursue traditional high school or college education. From an early age, Yudkowsky developed a deep interest in artificial intelligence and its potential long-term impacts on humanity. His work began to influence the nascent field of AI safety, where he focused on the challenge of aligning advanced AI systems with human values.
Yudkowsky is a founding researcher in the field of AI alignment and co-founder of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI), a research nonprofit based in Berkeley, California. Over more than two decades, he has significantly shaped the technical research agenda at MIRI and other research centers. His contributions include coining the term “friendly artificial intelligence” and popularizing ideas related to AI safety. He has authored several academic works, including chapters in “The Cambridge Handbook of Artificial Intelligence” and “Global Catastrophic Risks.” His views on the safety challenges posed by future AI systems are discussed in Stuart Russell and Peter Norvig’s undergraduate textbook “Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach.”
