Emma Wu, known by her stage names Gui Gui, Gemma, or Oh Young-gyul, is a versatile Taiwanese singer and actress with a career spanning both Mandopop and K-pop genres. She first gained prominence in 2005 as a member of Blackie’s Teenage Club, a variety show aimed at discovering young talents for Channel [V]. Following her selection, Wu became part of the nine-member Taiwanese girl group initially named Hei Se Hui Mei Mei, later renamed Hey Girl after a label change. The group released their self-titled debut album in August 2008.
Wu ventured into acting in 2007 with the idol drama “Brown Sugar Macchiato,” marking her debut on screen. Her acting career continued to blossom with roles in series like “Mysterious Incredible Terminator” (2008) alongside Aaron Yan and Alien Huang. Despite early setbacks in drama scheduling, she persisted and returned to television in 2011 with “I, My Brother.”
In 2012, Wu expanded into the film industry with “The Four,” a three-part series featuring a star-studded cast. Her career further diversified internationally when she joined the Korean reality show “We Got Married” in 2013, pairing with Ok Taecyeon from 2PM.
After a hiatus, Wu signed with Polyface Entertainment Media Group in 2011, where she reignited her music career with a new identity under CJ E&M in 2016. She released her debut EP “GEMMA,” marking a significant milestone in her music journey. In 2017, she established Gemma Wu Studio, followed by signing with Avex Taiwan in 2019, leading to the release of her first studio album “GX” in September 2020, celebrating her 15th anniversary in the entertainment industry.
