Fabio Basile was born on October 7, 1994, in Rivoli, Italy. He began his judo career early, demonstrating talent in various junior categories. In 2010, at the age of 16, Basile earned a bronze medal at the World Juniors Championships in Agadir in the –55 kg category. The same year, he also secured a silver medal at the European Cadet Championships in Teplice. His early career progression included a bronze at the European U23 Judo Championships in Prague in 2012, competing in the –60 kg division, and another bronze at the European Junior Championships in Bucharest in 2014, also in the –60 kg category. These achievements set the foundation for his future success in senior competitions.
Basile’s career saw a significant turning point in 2015 when he won a gold medal at the European U23 Judo Championships in Bratislava in the –66 kg category. This was followed by a bronze medal at the European Championships in Kazan in 2016, also in the –66 kg division. The peak of his career came at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where he won the gold medal in the men’s 66 kg event, marking Italy’s 200th Olympic gold medal. He represented the Akiyama Settimo judo club, becoming their first Olympic champion. After his Olympic victory, Basile transitioned to the –73 kg weight class, continuing to compete at a high level.
His achievements in the –73kg category include a gold medal at the IJF Grand Prix Tel Aviv in 2020 and another gold at the IJF Grand Slam Antalya in 2021. He also secured silver medals at the IJF Grand Slam Ekaterinburg in 2019 and the IJF Grand Prix Zagreb in 2018, as well as bronze medals at the IJF Grand Slam Paris in 2019 and the IJF Grand Prix Linz in 2023. Basile’s consistent performance at international events across different weight categories highlights his adaptability and dedication to the sport. He continues to engage with the judo community through events like the Fabio Basile Technical and Training Camp.
