Gareth Malone OBE is a choirmaster and broadcaster who shot to fame on the BAFTA award winning television show The Choir, where he helped introduce members of the public to choral music and formed choirs from scratch with people who had often not sung before. Malone has contributed to several chart hit singles, firstly with the choir that he brought together for the BBC Two television series The Choir: Military Wives as they reached the coveted Christmas Number one spot with their track ‘Wherever You Are’, and also reaching number one in the UK with a group of celebrities on the Children in Need single ‘Wake Me up’, a cover of the classic Avicii song. Malone was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to music in 2012.
Born in London, Malone attended the Royal Academy of Music in 2005, passing a postgraduate vocal studies course with distinction. He worked for the London Symphony Orchestra until he got his big break when a production company approached him about a series focussing on singing in schools, named The Choir. The show was a tremendous success, won two BAFTAs and made Malone a household name. In the following years Malone has been a regular fixture on UK television, appearing on shows as diverse as 2017’s pitch battle and Never Mind The Buzzcocks. He has written several books on choral singing, including a behind-the-scenes account of The Choir television series, and in 2013 he recruited 16 young singers for his Gareth Malone Voices choir, recording an album and performing at 14 locations throughout the UK.
As Britain’s most famous choirmaster, Malone’s career continues to rise and he is in high demand for his television appearances, musical recordings and concert tours.
