James Perry is an actor, writer and comedian. He is best known for his work as part of JK Studios, a collective of six comedians from Provo, Utah, who mainly produce sketch comedy and short films. In particular, he is known for his comic character the ‘Lobster Bisque’, which evolved from small casual impressions he did for the rest of the group.
Born in Sacramento, California, Perry was immersed in theatre from a young age. He pursued his acting interests at school, appearing in many productions and eventually joining the sketch troupe Divine comedy. It was here he first began to hone his skills and develop a comedy angle. Although his passion was for performing, he had keen academic interest, and graduated from Brigham Young University in 2013 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He continued to pursue a career in comedy however, and took a role on BYUtv’s Studio C, where he has taken an active role in writing, producing and directing a variety of shows.
A diverse and varied talent, he has demonstrated a keen ability as an author. He wrote a book: Still Want To Be An Astronaut, which was critically acclaimed. With an autobiographical edge, it describes the journey Perry took in breaking away from his career as an engineer to pursue his real passion of comedy and acting. On this topic, he also did a TEDx talk, which has amassed over 137,000 views on YouTube.
